The red basil is a variety of the green basil. The leaves are less curved and the leaf edges are jagged and not smooth. The colouring varies from a light red to deep purple.
Red basil can be used in the kitchen in the same way as its green-leaved relative. However, it stands out with its impressive colour and sometimes more intense flavour. When used to garnish dishes, it sets accents and therefore has a particularly decorative value.
